Chain Gang News
January, 2012
In order that we can promote
open time trial events, club events and allow club members to ride other club’s
open events we have to be affiliated to Cycling Time Trials (CTT). The Executive
Committee of the CTT, without consultation from its district committees, has
decided that levies for club events will be increased by 100%, from £1 to £2 per
rider, this, they say, brings the levy in line with that paid by riders in open
events. As you will appreciate this means that the entrance fee for club events
will be increased as follows: under 18s - £2; full and 2nd claim members - £3; guest riders - £4.
At a special Midland District
Council meeting last November all of the club’s representatives present voiced
their objections but to no avail.
Subscriptions
It has been a few years since
the last increase and after a great deal of discussion, it was decided at the
AGM that, unfortunately, the club’s subscriptions will have to be increased to
the following: full - £20; family - £30;
2nd claim - £12; schoolboy/girl and junior - £5; associate - £3.
It is hoped that
the membership will continue to support the club despite the forced increases.
Tuesday 10s
As reported in the last
newsletter the first and last three events which would have started at 6.30pm
have been cancelled, this has been due to a number of members not turning up to
take their turn on the 10s rota. Instead of 24 events they have been reduced to
18 and, hopefully, those members on the rota will ensure that they turn up to do
their bit. The first event will be on 24th April, the last on 21st August, starting
at
7pm.
Also it was reported in the newsletter
that we had to rely on committee members, who already give up enough of their
time throughout the year, to turn up and carry out the task of signing-on riders
and recording times.
What would be great if those
members that do not ride of a Tuesday evening would offer their services to take
on this task, allowing more members to have a ride.
If we do not have volunteers prepared to
take on the role of signing-on riders and recording times the 10s could be in
jeopardy.
This is YOUR club and its continued
success relies solely on YOUR support. Please give some serious thought to what
you might be able to offer.
Club championship 25
This will be held on
Sunday, 10th June, with a
9 am start and held on our two circuit course, wouldn’t it be
great if we had the same turnout for this event as we do for a Tuesday evening.
If you do not intend to ride then please consider in offering your services to
help out marshalling, etc. If you
haven’t ridden a 25 before this is a great chance to gain the experience without
being under pressure as you would find yourself if you were to enter an open
event for the first time. It is appreciated that this isn’t the easiest of
courses; being two circuits if you find you are struggling after the first lap
you will be near the headquarters should you wish to retire, but be sure to
inform the time-keeper that you have packed.
Open events
The first of these events,
organised by Mick Wills, is a two-up 25 mile time trial will be on
Sunday,
22nd April, and will be held on our course with a 9am start. Entry forms are required
for this event.
The Challenge Weekend organised by Kelvin Southan, starts with a 10 mile
time trial on Saturday, 23rd June, and will be held on our course with a 2pm start. Entry forms are required for this event.
The 25 mile time trial will be
on Sunday, 24th June, held on our
course with a
9am start. Entry forms are required for this event.
If you are able to help out with
marshalling, etc, for any of these events please indicate the date/s you are
available on your membership form and then place the date/s in your diary or on
your calendar. The success of these events relies on the support of the
membership.
CTT entry forms
For entering open events the
required CTT entry form with August 2011 at its foot is required. Be sure to use
this form as otherwise your entries may well be returned and could result in a
missed ride.
Racing results
After a poor showing of
members not making claims for trophies, Paul Sidwell, claims secretary, has
suggested that he will monitor results throughout the year and on those results
trophies will be awarded.
This will require members to
report all their results to
marc-lee@tiscali.co.uk, especially
from time-trialling and road racing, etc, so that they can be inserted in the
appropriate forum of the website. Success of this will be down to your
co-operation.
Club’s website
There is a great deal of
interesting information placed on the club’s website and members are urged to
keep checking the information from each heading placed under ‘forum’. Within
‘useful information’ you will find details of sportives, training camps,
holidays, etc, if you search through the items listed you may find something
different that will interest you and perhaps test your fitness.
Presentation evening
The evening, organised by Mick
Wills, was a great success, and we were privileged in having Lucy Garner, the
Junior Women’s Road Race World Champion, to present the prizes to the deserving
winners.
Boxing Day 10
Considering the time of the
year a reasonable morning saw 22 riders taking part in this annual event. Thanks
go to Trevor, Roger, Kay, and Dick Lovell, for giving up their time to ensure
that the event went ahead.
Annual General Meeting
Almost 30 members attended the
AGM on Monday, 9th January. Elected officers for 2012 are:
Life president - Trevor Page; chairman - Mike Deamon;
secretary - Barry Fryer;
treasurer - Steve Loraine (elected in
his absence); press secretary - Marc
Lee; clothing secretary - Joules Reed;
equipment secretary - Steve Radmall;
cyclo-cross secretary - Richard
Gamble; Tuesday
evening secretary - Roger Towe; claims secretary
- Paul Sidwell; development secretary
- Kelvin Southan; senior representatives
- Mick Wills, Colin Whitford, Steve Evans, and Ralph Richardson;
junior representatives - Eleanor
Mather and Charlie Lowndes.
Special thanks to Eleanor for taking the minutes.
Special thanks also go to our outgoing treasurer, Norman Stacey, who has
competently looked after our finances for a few years and his input at committee
meetings will be missed.
Thanks were also offered to Linda, who has resigned from supplying us
with teas and cakes. Those present also wished Linda a speedy recovery from her
broken leg which she suffered while on holiday.
Morgan Reynolds was awarded honorary
life membership, not only for being the longest continuous serving member (apart
from Trevor Page), but also for the work and time he has given to the club.
Rear lights
The introduction of compulsory
rear lights for safety sake has been accepted by members and guests alike.
You will continue to be required to have
a fully working rear light and it is recommended that you also fit a front
light, making yourselves more visible.
Your safety is paramount, so be seen, be safe.
Also be sure to carry your
safety wallet with you at all times. If
you haven’t received one or need another let me know.
Training equipment hire
For anyone interested in
hiring/borrowing some equipment for training purposes or to ‘try before you
buy’, the club is offering the use of a turbo trainer and also a set of rollers.
A set of rollers bought with the funding for the Flyers will be lent only to
members under the age of 18.
If anyone is interested in ‘renting’ a turbo trainer or wanting to try
out some rollers, please contact Kelvin on 07841457396 or e-mail
d_generate_kelv@hotmail.com.
They are available to all club members and the cost of hire for a week is £2,
and free to anyone aged under 18. Depending on demand each hire period will be
for one week with the option to rent the equipment for longer if available. The
equipment will be expected to be returned in the same condition as it was
received. If this is a success the club may well invest in more up-to-date
equipment.
Hope Against Cancer
Below is a copy of a letter
sent to Mick Wills from this charity.
Dear Mick
On behalf of the trustees and volunteers, I write to
thank you and the members of the
Hinckley Cycle Racing Club for your
continued interest in Hope and the generous donation of £265.We are grateful that our work for cancer research is
supported in this way and every contribution is most thankfully received. This
money will be used to provide the very best research here in Leicestershire and
Rutland.
Since Hope was founded in 2003 we have raised in
excess of £2.2m for this very purpose and have funded 28 research fellowships.
Once again many thanks.
Dorothy Tomlinson, Hope assistant
