Dodging between the showers we had 5 kids turn up to todays 'Go-Ride' session at Brodick Park along with coaches Elspeth Brimley, Kelvin Southan and myself. With next weeks Misterton Go-Racing firmly on the minds of the riders we decided to do a track session on the fine grass track Hinckley DC have kindly marked out for us.
After warm-ups and sprints on the track we went into 'flying one lap' time trials. These were quickly followed by 'standing start one lap' time trials with times for both compared. With part of next weeks racing being a time trial we thought it was important to cover all aspects of this discipline.
We then moved on to a 'behead the snake' session teaching the kids the benefits of staying behind other riders to shield them from winds etc. This worked well with every rider having a turn at the front then a final wicked one lap sprint at the end.
We finished the session with a pairs pursuit race, boys -v- girls with pairs starting off at opposite sides of the track and racing for 5 laps - the girls won, just!
An enjoyable session, for the coaches as well as the kids.
Don't forget if you are interested in seeing what we are doing with the kids 'Go-Ride' takes place fortnightly at Brodick Park, Hollycroft from 2-3 pm (next one Saturday 28 August). The Misterton Go-Racing event is Sunday 22 August at Misterton Hall, Lutterworth starting at 10.00 am, why not ride out and support our 'Flyers'

This session was ran by Elspeth and myself, we had 7 riders all usual suspects!

The session started with a light warm up with Elspeth which was followed up by a short section on mass starts from a standing position, which ended with a mass start race around a cone 20m away and back to the start which had some riders moaning about being pushed out of line which helped lead onto the next session which was funnelling.
We had the riders riding in pairs getting closer and closer to the point where they were having to lean on each other to get through a small gate of cones, this went down really well and the kids did enjoy the activity even though there were quite a few coming together luckily no broken bones.

The penultimate part of the session was a race around a short track over the humps in the park and around some sharp turns.

To round of the session we had a game of sumo, although we didn't eliminate riders as we used this as a cool down with the riders riding at low speeds.

Next session is 14th August 2-3pm Brodick road park.
Anyone has any questions or is interested in coming along don't hesitate to e-mail or leave a message here.

Kelv.

3 July Go-Ride session @ Brodick Park

7 riders turned up at yesterdays Go-Ride session @ Brodick Park. I was the only available coach as everyone else had committments elsewhere and Elspeth was attending her BC Level 2 course.

The session started with a thorough warm up, mainly on the bike with some running incorporated to make sure the riders were well prepared for the main session which focused on starting and starting technique. After some technical input we got into head to head racing, first as a large group then one on one which the kids loved if their shouts when they won were anything to go by, who's says competition in kids is a bad thing! Basically they were racing over 20-30 metres to be first between two cones set 1 metre apart, the fitter and mentally stronger ones being the winners.

We finished off the session with some racing round the park incorporating the newly learnt starting skills together with the previously taught skills of cornering, mount / dismount etc. A quick cool down and it was all over for another week. The kids are really looking forward to their first taste of Go-Racing at Misterton on 22 August - should be good fun.

Next session @ Brodick Park is on 17 July 2-3 pm, all standards aged 8-16 welcome, just need a bike, helmet, drink and a parent.
