Newport Nocturne This Saturday!

The promoters of Britain's original floodlit criterium have put together a top class field for this year's event. The event will feature all of the UK's major squads. Riders such as Malcolm Elliott, Chris Newton, Ed Clancy and Tony Gibb will all be hoping to win the prestigious race.

The small Shropshire town has attracted crowds of up to 14,000 for previous events. Promoter Nick Jeggo explained why it's so popular "We've been putting on Pro races here since 1970 so the spectators are very cycling-savvy. We concentrate on the entertainment aspect and the floodlit format gives it an almost theatrical feel. By only putting the race on every 2 or 3 years the crowds are always hungry for it and this year is no exception."

The evening kicks off with the "Past Masters" race for ex-Pros. This gives the stars of yesteryear a chance to dust off their old bikes and line up for their fans once again. The race will feature Sid Barras, Les West, Keith Lambert and numerous other cycling stars.

Before the start of the main Elite race there will be a special event to honour two previous winners of the Nocturne. Chris Newton and Malcolm Elliott will each ride a two lap time trial paired with two young riders. James Ireson, 13, and Jack Escritt, 12, are getting the chance of a lifetime when they take to the start ramp with their heroes in the Regeneration/New Generation Challenge. Newton is retiring immediately after the Nocturne and Elliott is going to scale down his racing programme. Nick said "We thought this would be a great way of giving Chris and Malcolm centre stage on the night. The two young lads are really excited too. They're big rivals and will be taking it very seriously."

Elliot and Newton will be given a couple of minutes to cool down before taking to the line again for the Pinarello Newport Nocturne Elite Race. There's a massive prize list and primes on most laps. The winner will also get a novel prize; he'll get his weight in beer! As he sits on one side of a set of giant scales, a local publican will pile packs of beer on the other side. The tradition started a few years ago as a one-off stunt, but was so popular it has continued ever since.

The Newport Nocturne takes place on the evening of Saturday September 4th in Newport Shropshire Town Centre.

Further details can be found on the website. http://www.bikerace.co.uk/

Come and join us on Saturday

The Newport Nocturne is Back!

After a three year break, Britain’s original floodlit criterium takes to streets of Newport, Shropshire on September 4th.

Past editions have attracted crowds of up to 14,000 spectators to see cycling superstars like Mark Cavendish, David Millar, Geraint Thomas, Roger Hammond and even Jason Queally!

A lap of the partly cobbled 1.2 mile circuit takes just a couple of minutes. Meanwhile several live bands provide music for all tastes. The winner of the Elite criterium is the beneficiary of a rather strange custom; he wins his weight in beer! The promotion uses a set of giant scales, and as the winner sits on one side of them, a local publican stacks bottles of beer on the other!

The unique event kicks off with a “Past Masters” race for ex-Pro riders. In 2003, multiple Classics and Tour de France stage winner, Sean Kelly narrowly outsprinted ‘Super-Sid’ Barras for the win.

info@bikerace.co.uk
http://www.bikerace.co.uk

But, just in case not, the Tour Ride offers the opportunity for cyclists to ride an official stage of the Tour of Britain. The Pro Tour Ride is 161km, the Challenge Tour Ride is 80km, and there will also be a choice of 5-25km rides for families to enjoy in and around Longton Park. The event raises money to help fight prostate cancer, which continues to kill a man every hour in the UK.

Full information and sign-up is available at http://www.tourride.co.uk, or call 020 8222 7131.

If you would be kind enough to share news of the Tour Ride with your members, I would be so grateful. And please don't hesitate to contact me if I can provide any more information. In addition, if you'd like to put a team together, I'd be more than happy to arrange a free place for the team organiser, so just let me know.

With real thanks,

Victoria

Victoria Leigh
for The Prostate Cancer Charity
Stoke-on-Trent Tour Ride 2010
vjleigh@gmail.com
07946 106581

Subject: Audax tour and club cycling holidays, Corsica
From: harriet@europe-active.com
To: barry.fryer2@hotmail.co.uk

Dear Barry,

My name is Harriet (Harry) Bristow. I used to live, work (and cycle!) in London before I decided to give up living in the city, to move to Corsica. I now live and work with my partner, Anthony and we run an active holiday business, called Europe-Active. You can find us at http://www.europe-active.com.

We run all sorts of holidays for active people, but we specialise in holidays for keen cyclists.

A couple of our products have become very popular over the past few years and have attracted the attention of several UK cycle clubs. We would like to continue with specialising in cycle club holidays, as we enjoy the groups that come and take part. I have attached the link for a couple of trips that may interest your club.

We run two specific trips for clubs - one is the audax tour of Corsica, with daily stages from 100km to 180km per stage and the other is a slightly less strenuous version, with daily stages around 100km (there is a regular version and a comfort version). We provide assistance throughout with the aid of a support vehicle. The luggage is also transferred inbetween each stage.

Please see the links below for these two trips:

http://www.cycling-corsica.com/gb/_search/cycling-tour-corsica-audax/

http://www.cycling-corsica.com/gb/_search/corsica-road-bike-tour-assista/

We are a small and friendly company, and we do our best to create holidays to suit our clients. Many of our holidays are tailor-made to fit the precise requirements of our customers. We are also expanding our road riding holidays into Italy now that we have a permanent office in Lucca, Tuscany.

If you would be interested in any of the tours described above, possibly for next year, please do get in touch and I would be happy to answer your queries. I often come back to the UK, so if you would like to meet in person, that may also be a possibility.

We could also give you or any of your individual members a discount for this year's Audax tour, starting on the 26th September - 30 euros off the price of the tour plus a free Europe-Active jersey (worth 39 euros, see http://www.cycling-corsica.com/gb/cycling-jersey-corsica/ ).

I will look forward to hearing from you. In the meantime, I hope you get to enjoy the summer!

Kindest regards,

Harry

--

EUROPE ACTIVE
11, lot.
